Niles Township Food Pantry
Dear Friends:
We are so pleased to share that our event in support of the Niles Township Food Pantry in 2023 was a huge success thanks to the donations and support of so many of our generous community members and friends. Thanks to the help of so many, we were able to collect thousands of dollars’ worth of badly needed toiletries and monetary donations for those in need.
For those of you who are not familiar with Niles Township Government, here is some information on the organization. Niles Township Government has three main functions. They have a Clerk’s Office, which is devoted to record keeping and voting advocacy, an Assessor’s Office, which advocates for the taxpayer on property tax issues, and a Supervisor’s Office, that oversees the township as a whole and also operates as a social service agency, lifting up their most vulnerable residents. The goal of the township is to understand the struggles that their residents face and to provide a ladder out of poverty, ensuring that ALL of their neighbors can achieve their fullest potential. Some of the tools that the township uses to achieve this goal are financial assistance programs, monetary aid for childcare and camps, free legal assistance, grants to area agencies, and access to their fresh market food pantry.
Niles Township Government supports Lincolnwood, Skokie, Morton Grove and Niles (portions east of Harlem), Village of Golf, and a small piece of Glenview. It is important to note that there is a sizeable population of Assyrians in that community which has grown exponentially in the past decade. We also know that a significant percentage of people who go to the food pantry are Assyrian. Niles Township Food Pantry serves 3,036 households a month. The pantry is set up like a fresh market, with shelf stable food; but also, with fresh produce, fresh meat, dairy, and even pet food and flowers. Neighbors may access the pantry three times in a month, greatly reducing the amount of food insecurity experienced by the families of the township.
